Tinubu Pledges to Boost Local Arms Production and Fortify Security Institutions.

President Bola Tinubu has vowed to significantly increase local production of arms and ammunition as a cornerstone of his strategy to enhance Nigeria's security. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Course 33 of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja, the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that strengthening indigenous defense capabilities will reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and sharpen the fight against insecurity.

A Commitment to Building Human Capital

President Tinubu described the NDC as a "vivid representation" of his administration’s commitment to building the human capital essential for national survival. He highlighted the importance of indigenous manufacturing of military hardware, calling it "indispensable to our nation’s security and development."

The President commended the NDC’s tradition of research excellence, specifically citing a key study titled “Presidential Treaties on Harnessing Indigenous Manufacturing for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2040.” He confirmed that he has directed relevant stakeholders to review the study's recommendations to implement its proposed strategies.

Strengthening Institutions and Economic Reform

The President praised the theme of the course, “Strengthening Institutions for National Security and Development in Nigeria,” noting that strong, resilient institutions are the foundation of any successful society. He stated that his administration has made institutional strengthening a national priority, believing that "without strong institutions there can be no lasting democracy."

He also touched on the administration's economic reforms, citing renewed investor confidence and a significant 48% year-on-year growth in the stock market—the best performance in nearly three decades. While acknowledging the need to address inflation and food insecurity, he expressed confidence that these reforms will eventually lead to prosperity for all Nigerians.

The Future of the National Defence College

President Tinubu reiterated his administration's commitment to completing the permanent site of the NDC in Piwoyi. He stated that he has been briefed on the state of the infrastructure and is determined to see the project through, with the vision of transforming the college into a "Defence Postgraduate University." He has directed the Commandant to work with the Minister of Defence on a clear strategy for facility upgrades.

In his address to the graduands, the President implored them to be partners in "birthing the new Nigeria we all dream of." He acknowledged the complex global landscape they are entering but expressed confidence that their strategic training has prepared them to "lead with vision and courage."

Earlier in the ceremony, the Commandant of the NDC, Rear Admiral J.O. Okosu, and Deputy Commandant, Major General Kevin Ukandu, both expressed gratitude for the administration's support and confidence in the graduands' ability to tackle key security challenges such as banditry and oil theft.
