Atiku Vows to Prioritize National Progress Over Personal Ambition.

LAGOS — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to critics, stating that his political aspirations are driven not by desperation to become president in 2027, but by a commitment to a better and more prosperous Nigeria. The former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate made this declaration at a ceremony welcoming new members to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos.

Represented by Professor Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Atiku, who recently left the PDP to join the ADC, described the new party not as a political entity but as a "movement of Nigerians for a better Nigeria." He emphasized that the focus is on a national vision, not on his personal ambition.

"It’s not about Atiku having to be president at all costs," Professor Olateju said. "The 'must' is for him to see Nigeria deliver as wished by all."

Atiku stated that the ADC's 2027 presidential candidate would be chosen through a free and fair contest, with the entire movement rallying behind whoever emerges. He stressed that the ultimate goal is to elect a leader who will represent "the collective voice and aspiration of Nigeria."

Aregbesola Calls for Urgent Action to Rescue Nigeria

Also at the event, former Minister of Interior and ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, issued a stark warning, calling for urgent action to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges. He welcomed the new defectors, which included prominent figures from the PDP and Labour Party, as a "bold step towards building a viable political alternative for Nigerians."

Aregbesola drew historical parallels, citing Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s 1983 address and the Hegelian notion of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis to explain that failed political orders are eventually replaced by new ones. He pointed to widespread insecurity, poverty, and a rising cost of living as evidence of a country in distress.

"Across the nation, the spectre of insecurity looms large," he said, highlighting how high costs for medical care and basic food items have pushed many families to the brink of despair.

Aregbesola cautioned that any government, regardless of its form, that neglects its citizens’ welfare will ultimately collapse under public frustration. He framed the ADC’s mission as a vehicle for citizens to reclaim power and redirect governance toward the people's welfare, stressing that "our intervention has become absolutely necessary. We must act now to save the nation.”
